Bay Area company partners with Orange County Fire to simulate wildfire response
Orange County Fire Authority teams with Paladin Industries to model wildfire spread and test firefighting strategies.
The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) has partnered with Paladin Industries, a company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, to develop software that simulates wildfire spread and tests how different firefighting actions might influence the fire's path, firerescue1.com reported.
This technology allows commanders to incorporate proposed containment lines, fire retardant drops, and other responses into wildfire models, moving beyond traditional predictive models that assume no intervention, according to OCFA Division Chief Mike Sheehan.
Paladin Industries intentionally avoids using artificial intelligence in its software to maintain transparency and allow users to understand the reasons behind fire spread and decision-making, company founder Jackson Yip explained.
In addition to this partnership, OCFA is collaborating with FireWERX, a nonprofit connecting fire agencies with technology developers, on a $300,000 competition to create technology for tracking firefighters in remote areas with unreliable communications.
These initiatives were highlighted during a wildfire technology roundtable hosted by Rep. Young Kim, which gathered fire officials, researchers, and technology developers to discuss innovative wildfire response strategies.
