France sees nationwide protests over schools and living costs
Protests in France unite students, yellow vest supporters over education and economic issues.
Protests have spread across France, starting from student demonstrations in Paris' northern suburbs against teacher shortages and poor school facilities, according to Al Jazeera English.
The movement expanded to cities such as Bordeaux, Rennes, Nantes, Lyon, Lille, and Marseille, involving students, trade unions, and supporters of the yellow vest movement.
On Saturday, about 550,000 people demonstrated nationwide, mostly peacefully, though some incidents of looting and clashes with police occurred, with 1,200 arrests and 150 police officers injured, the Interior Ministry and Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu reported.
The protests reflect broader anger over deteriorating public services, high living costs, and political dissatisfaction, with observers noting the unrest as a continuation of tensions dating back to the 2018 yellow vest movement.
The demonstrations have evolved into a wider political crisis challenging President Emmanuel Macron's government and the French political system, which some see as offering limited prospects for change.
