Spotify CEO Alex Norström confirmed on an earnings call that the company is using a new QR code verification method to ensure Family Plan users actually live together, according to The Verge.

The QR code requires scanning the plan manager's phone and refreshes every few seconds. Users who miss the seven-day window to scan the code face a 12-month ban from joining other Family or Duo plans, The Verge reported.

Norström described the verification improvements as a routine process, stating that Spotify will continue to update methods as users find ways to bypass them.

This is not Spotify's first effort to limit Family Plan sharing to people living in the same household. The company views the ongoing verification as necessary to close 'holes' in plan sharing, The Verge added.
