Adelaide, the fifth-largest city in Australia, has been gaining attention as a vibrant travel destination, according to reports from The Oakland Press, The Mercury, and Oneida Dispatch. Once considered a quieter city overshadowed by more famous Australian landmarks, Adelaide has recently experienced a cultural and urban revival that is drawing visitors.

The city has been recognized on several best places to visit lists for 2026 by outlets such as CNN, Afar, and Frommer's. This renewed interest comes after years of development and cultural projects that have enhanced Adelaide's appeal.

Local entrepreneur Katina Vangopoulos, founder of Flamboyance Tours, highlighted the city's livability and growing range of activities as reasons for its rising popularity. Her company offers small-group walking tours focusing on areas like Chinatown, East End wine bars, and the pedestrian-only Rundle Mall shopping corridor.

Significant investments in Adelaide's infrastructure and cultural scene have contributed to its transformation. The Adelaide Oval sports venue was upgraded into a multipurpose stadium seating over 50,000 people, invigorating the downtown area. Additionally, relaxed licensing laws have encouraged the opening of new small bars, including the Art Deco-inspired speakeasy Maybe Mae.

The Street Art Explosion project has added dozens of colorful murals, contributing to a creative urban vibe. Furthermore, a former brownfield site in nearby Port Adelaide was converted into an Aboriginal cultural center, which debuted last year, enhancing the city's cultural offerings.

Adelaide's longstanding reputation as Australia's festival capital remains intact, and its previous nickname, the City of Churches, is now seen as outdated given the city's evolving identity and energy.
