Angie Nixon holds town hall with Disney workers in Orlando
Florida Senate candidate Angie Nixon met with Disney World employees to discuss cost of living and immigration concerns.
Florida Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon held a town hall meeting with Disney World employees in Orlando, according to Orlando Weekly. Nixon, a progressive from Jacksonville, listened to workers share their worries about the rising cost of living, unaffordable healthcare, grocery prices, and immigration policies under the Trump administration.
Nixon was joined by former U.S. Senator Bill Nelson at the event. Orlando Weekly reported that Florida has the third-largest population of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. and the highest number of immigrants legally residing under Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
The Trump administration has sought to revoke TPS for countries including Venezuela, Haiti, and Syria, putting many immigrants in Florida at risk of deportation. Edner Alouidor, a Disney EPCOT custodian and union member from Haiti, emphasized that immigrant workers seek dignity and hope, not special treatment.
Nixon, a Florida House representative and former union organizer, is campaigning on policies including a $25 minimum wage, universal healthcare through Medicare for All, and stronger workers’ rights under the proposed Protecting the Right to Organize Act. This legislation aims to protect union organizing and penalize employers who violate workers’ rights.
The PRO Act has passed the U.S. House but not the Senate. Nixon’s platform also includes removing corporate super PACs from politics. She highlighted her personal experience with struggle and her commitment to supporting workers and immigrant families in Florida.
