Randy Villegas, a community college professor with significant progressive endorsements, has won the race for California's 22nd congressional district, The Guardian reported.

Villegas defeated incumbent Republican David Valadao, who had served six terms in Congress.

The district was redrawn under Proposition 50 and was considered the only true toss-up in California.

Both candidates are from Central Valley immigrant families with working class or agricultural backgrounds, reflecting the district's demographic.

This election result marks a shift in representation for the district, moving from a Republican to a Democratic congressman.
