COCC begins $8 million expansion of Manufacturing Center to meet labor demand
Central Oregon Community College expands facilities amid rising enrollment and regional workforce needs.
Central Oregon Community College (COCC) has started an $8 million expansion and renovation of its Manufacturing Center, KTVZ reported.
The project responds to increasing regional demand for skilled labor and a 12% rise in student enrollment in manufacturing degrees and certificates this academic term.
The expansion includes a 34,300-square-foot remodel of manufacturing technology labs to enhance CNC labs and add classrooms for product design and quality control.
Additionally, a 6,500-square-foot new space will enlarge welding and fabrication labs, allowing more students to train on equipment similar to that used by local manufacturers.
Funding combines $4 million from COCC's general funds with a matching $4 million grant from Oregon's Higher Education Coordinating Commission, with further costs to be met through fundraising.
COCC President Greg Pereira highlighted the college's focus on meeting manufacturing workforce demands, noting job growth in manufacturing and homebuilding in Central Oregon and Redmond.
