Matthew Martinez, who has lived nearly all his 60 years on a property along the Navajo River in southwestern Colorado, experienced severe flooding for the first time in recent weeks, according to the Associated Press reported by dailygazette.com.

The Navajo River surged twice in two weeks, flooding Martinez's home and outbuildings, damaging his barn, swallowing a corral, and causing significant mud and water damage. He also lost a horse and many tools that were washed downstream, dailygazette.com detailed.

Martinez estimates the damage to be around $200,000 and has been unable to obtain flood insurance because of his proximity to the river, the report said. He expressed concern that life might never return to normal after the flooding.

The flooding occurred about 25 miles south of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Martinez was out of town for knee surgery during the floods and faced difficulties returning due to muddy conditions requiring a four-wheel-drive vehicle, dailygazette.com added.

The situation highlights challenges faced by residents in flood-prone areas who lack insurance coverage and face substantial losses from natural disasters, as seen in this case along the Navajo River.
