Daniel Island residents discuss traffic and future of donated land with Charleston mayor
Mayor Cogswell addressed traffic concerns and announced a public input process for 62 acres donated to Charleston on Daniel Island.
Charleston Mayor William Cogswell met with Daniel Island residents during a State of the City event to discuss ongoing issues and plans for the community, WCIV reported. Traffic congestion was the primary concern raised by attendees, reflecting a 54 percent increase in traffic around Daniel Island since 2015.
A survey conducted as part of the State of Our City initiative found that 81 percent of respondents identified commute times as their biggest frustration, highlighting the urgency of addressing transportation challenges. Mayor Cogswell acknowledged the severity of the traffic problems and affirmed the city's commitment to finding solutions.
Residents noted that while transportation is a major issue, the city has limited responsibility for roads on Daniel Island, which complicates efforts to improve conditions. Despite this, the mayor emphasized that traffic remains the dominant topic among community members.
In addition to traffic concerns, Mayor Cogswell announced that the City of Charleston will launch a public engagement process in January to determine the future use of 62 acres of land recently donated to the city on Daniel Island, according to WCBD.
These meetings are part of a series aimed at addressing challenges across Lowcountry communities, with Daniel Island being the third of five sessions held in the past month.
