Palo Alto experienced a small decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in 2025, driven by growth in electric vehicle adoption, according to a recent analysis reported by Palo Alto Online.

The report, prepared by city staff, indicates that this marks a positive shift following four consecutive years of rising emissions. The reduction is primarily attributed to lower car-related emissions.

Despite this progress, Palo Alto remains far from its ambitious target of cutting emissions by 80% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The City Council is scheduled to discuss the findings on November 2.

The analysis was presented in the context of the annual State of the City event, which featured the Palo Alto Police Department's new electric Rivian vehicle, highlighting the city's commitment to electric transportation.

This development in Palo Alto may be of interest to San Jose residents and local policymakers as the region continues to address climate goals and transportation emissions.
