Several news outlets including wglt.org, wwno.org, and aspenpublicradio.org reported on the challenges families face in predicting and managing the costs associated with pregnancy and childbirth. The expenses vary widely, making it difficult for expecting parents to budget accurately.

Grace and Daniel Griffin, a couple from Calumet, Michigan, shared their experience preparing financially for their first child. They attempted to estimate costs using a UnitedHealthcare student plan cost estimator, but it required medical billing codes they did not have, leading to inaccurate estimates.

The Griffins found a Summary of Benefits and Coverage on their health plan’s website that estimated out-of-pocket costs for a routine pregnancy and delivery at about $2,700, which they initially thought was manageable. However, as medical bills accumulated, they realized the actual expenses were much higher.

Early in the pregnancy, Grace met her $500 deductible and was responsible for 20% coinsurance on in-network care. Routine blood tests, such as those for iron levels and gestational diabetes, cost several hundred dollars each visit, causing expenses to rise quickly.

After a routine pregnancy and delivery, the Griffins received detailed explanations of benefits that revealed the true financial impact. Their experience highlights the importance of thorough financial planning and understanding insurance details when preparing for pregnancy costs.
