Canada's defense minister confirmed that people were killed and injured in an incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, which led to a major fire, CBS News reported.

Hospitals in Edmonton, about 120 miles northwest of the base, were receiving large numbers of injured patients, overwhelming local health-care facilities, according to statements from an emergency physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital cited by CBS News and ABC News.

The fire spread beyond the base's fence into surrounding rural areas due to high winds, with firefighters from multiple jurisdictions responding, the Municipal District of Wainwright said, as reported by CBS News.

Authorities including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were actively investigating the incident, which was described as 'very, very active and delicate' by Defense Minister David McGuinty, CBS News and ABC News noted.

The Canadian Armed Forces and federal, provincial, and local authorities were coordinating the emergency response, with the nearby community of Wainwright providing hospital and firefighting support, CBS News reported.
