Brazil's Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a historic fourth term as president by defeating far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro in a runoff election, according to The Guardian. Lula won with 51.79% of the vote compared to Bolsonaro's 48.21%, overturning his first-round defeat where Bolsonaro led by over two million votes.

Lula is the first candidate since Brazil's return to democracy in 1985 to win a presidential runoff after finishing second in the initial round, Al Jazeera reported. The election saw a turnout of 80.8%, higher than the first round's 78.92%.

Despite the results, Bolsonaro refused to concede defeat and called for the runoff results to be annulled, The Guardian and Al Jazeera noted. This follows a pattern from the previous 2022 election, where Bolsonaro also did not acknowledge his loss to Lula.

Lula addressed supporters at a victory parade in Sao Paulo, emphasizing his commitment to govern for all Brazilians, as reported by Al Jazeera. His victory marks a setback for the right-wing political movement in Latin America, which has gained ground in recent years.

The election outcome raises questions about Brazil's political future, especially with Bolsonaro contesting the results. The Guardian highlighted the uncertainty about what comes next for Brazil following the refusal to concede.

Observers will be watching closely how Lula's administration proceeds amid ongoing political tensions and Bolsonaro's challenge to the election outcome.
