Miami-Dade voters to decide on renewing property tax for teacher pay and school security
Miami-Dade and Broward voters will vote on continuing a property tax that funds teacher salaries and school safety.
Voters in Miami-Dade and Broward counties will be asked to renew a special property tax that supplements teacher salaries and helps fund school security, CBS News Miami reported. This tax has been in place since 2018 and requires renewal every four years.
In the 2022 election, the tax renewal passed with 65 percent support in Miami-Dade and 57 percent in Broward County, according to CBS News Miami. The measure has bipartisan backing from Republicans and Democrats in South Florida.
Anna Fusco, president of the Broward Teachers Union, emphasized the importance of the referendum in supporting teachers financially. She noted that the tax helps teachers avoid working multiple jobs, which benefits students by ensuring they have engaged educators.
The renewal vote reflects ongoing efforts to maintain funding for teacher pay supplements and school safety measures in the Miami area. The outcome will determine if the property tax continues to support these priorities in local schools.
