Richmond groups hold voter education events ahead of midterm early voting
Local nonprofits educate Richmond voters on constitutional amendments and candidate choices before early voting ends Oct. 31.
The League of Women Voters Richmond Area Chapter hosted a voter registration and education event at the Market at 25th Street to prepare voters for early weekend voting, NBC12 reported. The chapter has been conducting voter education since August, focusing on this year's three constitutional amendments on reproductive health, marriage equality, and voting rights.
According to NBC12, Louise Evans, a board member of the League and RVA Indivisible lead, emphasized that while voters often know candidates, they are less informed about ballot items. The amendments would protect personal medical choices, guarantee equal marriage treatment, and restore voting rights automatically for certain people after incarceration.
Roxane Rucker, an organizer with the League, explained that the voting rights amendment would restore voting rights to people with felony convictions once their sentences are completed. She also highlighted the importance of voting for U.S. House and Senate seats that influence issues like healthcare, housing, and gasoline prices.
Early voting in Richmond continues through October 31, with three locations offering weekend and Sunday voting opportunities, NBC12 reported. Organizers hope these efforts will increase voter participation and awareness of key ballot measures affecting Virginia residents.
