Survivors and advocates gather for Central Virginia Heart Walk in Henrico
The annual Heart Walk at Innsbrook brought together survivors, transplant recipients, and advocates to celebrate life and raise awareness.
The American Heart Association's annual Central Virginia Heart Walk took place at Innsbrook in Glen Allen, Henrico County, drawing survivors, transplant recipients, and advocates. WTVR CBS 6 reported that the event was more than just a walk; it was a celebration of life and a demonstration of the community's support for heart health.
Devin Tobin, chair of the Central Virginia Heart Walk, emphasized the personal connections within the community, noting that participants include neighbors and family members who embody the mission of the American Heart Association.
One participant, Wayne Hall, a heart failure survivor born with Tetralogy of Fallot, shared his journey. After recovering from a heart failure episode two years ago, Hall said the Heart Walk was the first event he wanted to join, describing it as his 'Super Bowl' and expressing excitement about completing the three-mile walk.
The event also highlighted the experiences of younger patients like 19-year-old Olivia Pacheco, born with two congenital heart defects and having undergone four open-heart surgeries before high school. Her participation underscores the importance of advocacy for heart conditions affecting all ages.
The Heart Walk serves as both a community gathering and an advocacy platform to raise awareness about heart disease, supporting patients and families across Central Virginia.
