Repair Cafe Charleston holds first event to fix household items for free
The inaugural Repair Cafe event in Charleston helped residents repair broken items and reduce waste.
Repair Cafe Charleston held its first event on Saturday, offering free repairs for a variety of household items, according to Live 5 WCSC. The event, organized in partnership with the Charleston County Public Library, aimed to give broken items a second life instead of discarding them.
Residents brought in a wide range of items including lamps, clocks, small appliances, clothing, bicycles, toys, and furniture. Bill Laughlin, founder of Repair Cafe Charleston and a retired architect, said the initiative promotes reuse, reduces waste, and helps people learn practical repair skills.
Laughlin was inspired to start the Charleston chapter after experiencing a similar program in Charlotte. He emphasized the importance of sustainability and community connection through fixing and reusing items.
One local resident brought in a fan that had become noisy, hoping to restore it to improve her sleep. Laughlin also noted that the event helps residents save money by repairing valuable items that might otherwise be discarded.
The Repair Cafe plans to continue hosting events to support sustainability and community engagement in Charleston.
This initiative reflects growing local efforts to reduce waste and promote environmentally friendly practices in the Charleston area.
