Hundreds raise over $130,000 for lung cancer research at Folly Beach 5K
More than 400 participants gathered at Folly Beach to support lung cancer research and awareness.
Hundreds of people from across the Lowcountry came together at Folly Beach to participate in the American Lung Association's annual Lung Force 5K, Live 5 WCSC reported. The event, held at the Dune House, attracted over 400 participants who wore turquoise to symbolize lung cancer awareness.
The fundraiser raised more than $130,000 to support lung cancer research and assist those undergoing treatment, according to Live 5 WCSC. Many participants, including local sponsor Tyler Letson from Mount Pleasant, have personal connections to lung cancer, which motivates their involvement.
Elaine Caru, cabinet chair for the Lung Association, noted that the shared personal impact of lung disease draws people back to the event each year. She emphasized the importance of lung health, saying, “If you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.”
The American Lung Association reports that lung cancer survival rates have improved by nearly 30% over the past five years. Letson credited ongoing research funding for these advancements, highlighting the role of experimental drugs and treatments in improving patient outcomes.
