San Jose Sharks rookie Ivar Stenberg reflects on NHL draft and Leafs rivalry
Sharks winger Ivar Stenberg shares his draft experience and upcoming game against Toronto Maple Leafs.
San Jose Sharks rookie winger Ivar Stenberg did not expect to be drafted first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2026 NHL draft, according to eastbaytimes.com. Stenberg said he never felt the Leafs were interested in selecting him with the top pick, citing lack of strong meetings with the team.
The Toronto Maple Leafs selected Penn State forward Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 overall pick, while the Sharks chose Stenberg at No. 2. Stenberg expressed acceptance of the Leafs' decision and happiness with joining the Sharks.
Stenberg, 19, and McKenna, 18, are set to face each other for the first time as NHL players when the Sharks play the Leafs at Scotiabank Arena during the Sharks' six-game road trip. They previously met in a World Junior Championship pre-tournament game.
Currently, Stenberg is tied for second in rookie scoring in the NHL with six points in seven games, while McKenna has five points in nine games. Stenberg praised McKenna as a good player and person, highlighting their interactions at the draft and combine.
