Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff secured re-election in the Georgia Senate race, defeating Republican Rep. Mike Collins, CBS News projected. Ossoff, who first won his seat in 2021, was the only Democrat running for re-election in a state won by President Trump in 2024.

The race was closely watched nationally as a key contest in the battle for control of the Senate. Republicans had viewed the seat as a top pickup opportunity, but Collins faced challenges including personal controversies and a contentious primary.

Collins, a trucking business owner and House member since 2023, attempted to portray Ossoff as disconnected from Georgian values. However, questions about Collins' associates and his close alignment with former President Trump appeared to impact his campaign.

Ossoff maintained a strong lead in polls and fundraising throughout the race. His victory ensures Democrats retain an important seat in a battleground state, keeping their hopes alive for a Senate majority.

NBC News noted that Ossoff's campaign drew national attention and that his speeches positioned him as a rising figure within the Democratic Party.
