The San Francisco Standard reported that AI-generated photographs depicting fake Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids are causing fear among immigrant communities in the Bay Area. These images have been widely shared on private messaging platforms during Operation Safe California, a recent immigration enforcement effort.

One such fabricated image showed dozens of ICE officers outside Alta Bates hospital in Berkeley, while another appeared to depict arrests near the AMC Metreon theater in San Francisco. A local undocumented immigrant named Juan received one of these images via WhatsApp and initially believed it to be real, prompting him to warn coworkers and prepare for a potential raid.

The viral spread of these fake images has heightened anxiety among immigrants, who rely on networks like San Francisco’s Rapid Response Network for verified information and support. The network operates a hotline to confirm ICE activity and provide assistance to affected individuals.

This situation highlights the challenges posed by misinformation during sensitive enforcement actions, as false visuals can quickly amplify fear and confusion within vulnerable communities.
