Anika Nilles trains intensely to meet physical demands of Rush drumming
Rush drummer Anika Nilles follows a rigorous workout and physiotherapy routine to handle the band's challenging drum parts.
Anika Nilles, the drummer for Rush's Fifty Something reunion tour, has adopted a demanding physical training regimen to prepare for the role. Recognizing the challenge of filling the shoes of the original drummer Neal Peart, Nilles works out every other day using 45-pound dumbbells, cable machines, and other exercise equipment.
Nilles does not engage in cardio workouts but emphasizes the importance of physiotherapy, seeing a physiotherapist after every concert to manage muscle fatigue and tightness. She noted that some shows leave her arms feeling fine, while others cause tiredness, but treatment helps her recover for the next performance.
The physical training is essential due to the challenging drum repertoire in Rush's catalog. Early in the tour, Nilles even chose to continue drumming backstage during the band's 20-minute intermission to keep her muscles warm.
Rush's North American tour is set to conclude on December 17 in Vancouver, but the band has planned international dates for early 2027 and a recently announced residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas in May. Nilles expressed enthusiasm about playing at the new venue, noting, "Everything is new for me there," and mentioning she had seen videos of No Doubt, Metallica, and U2 performing there.
