Anthropic commits 5% of shares to public benefit fund ahead of IPO
Anthropic will allocate 5% of its stock to a public benefit fund as it prepares for a major IPO, with plans to support social causes.
Anthropic announced it will dedicate 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund, potentially increasing this amount as the shares grow in value, according to the Daily Gazette and WFMZ reports. This fund, called the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, is a new entity within the company designed to support charitable donations and direct distributions to specific populations.
The company’s CEO and cofounders have pledged to donate 80% of their wealth and established Anthropic as a public benefit corporation, balancing financial goals with social impact, the Daily Gazette noted. An equity donation match program also allows employees to pledge equity that the company matches, expanding the fund's potential.
Anthropic cited the rapid progress of artificial intelligence and its societal impacts, including labor market effects, as reasons for creating the fund. It has already committed $200 million to study AI’s effects, but the fund aims to pursue broader and bolder approaches to public benefit.
The announcement comes as Anthropic prepares for a significant initial public offering, possibly in November, which could value the company at more than $1 trillion, according to the BBC. The fund’s shares will not be used for lobbying or political donations, the BBC reported, emphasizing the company’s focus on public good.
