A National Guard member was shot in the leg while trying to break up a fight near Eastern Market on Capitol Hill late Sunday night, according to WTOP and FOX 5 DC.

D.C. police said the incident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. outside an establishment less than a block from Eastern Market. A group of seven to eight National Guard members traveling in a van noticed the fight and intervened.

Police reported that the suspect pulled out a gun and fired at the National Guard members after being ordered to drop the weapon. Three Guard members returned fire, striking the suspect in the abdomen.

Both the injured National Guard member and the suspect were taken to hospitals and are expected to survive. The National Guard member was treated and released, according to FOX 5 DC.

D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said there is no ongoing threat to the community. The Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs and Criminal Investigation Division are investigating the shooting.

Authorities asked anyone with additional information to contact D.C. police.
