The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for 11 people missing after a boat carrying 27 capsized in the Pacific Ocean near Baja California, Mexico, according to Yahoo News. The search, which involved the Coast Guard, Mexican authorities, and the U.S. Navy, covered over 2,441 square miles and lasted 89 hours before being called off Sunday evening.

Survivors were found clinging to debris in the ocean, some suffering from suspected shark bites, as reported by Yahoo News. The incident occurred about 140 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico, after distress calls were received early Friday morning about a vessel taking on water.

Capt. Joseph Meuse of the Coast Guard Southwest District expressed gratitude for the cooperation between U.S. and Mexican agencies during the operation and highlighted the dangers posed by human traffickers involved in such maritime incidents.

The search involved aircraft and vessels from multiple agencies working in challenging offshore conditions and rough weather, as detailed by Yahoo News. The Coast Guard emphasized the risks to both migrants and rescue crews in these operations.

The Coast Guard Station San Diego was involved in the rescue efforts, as indicated by the presence of Coast Guard aircraft preparing for lift off at the station during the operation.

Authorities have not reported any further updates on the missing individuals, and the search efforts have officially ended as of Sunday evening.
