A National Guardsman and a suspect were shot during an altercation near the U.S. Capitol; both have non-life-threatening injuries.
A National Guardsman and a suspect were shot late Sunday night near the U.S. Capitol after Guard members intervened in a fight on the 400 block of 8th Street SE in Washington, D.C.'s Eastern Market neighborhood, according to talk1200boston.iheart.com and 570wkbn.iheart.com.
The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. when seven or eight National Guard members saw a fight break out on the sidewalk while monitoring the area from a van. The Guard members exited their vehicle to intervene, and one individual involved in the fight pulled out a firearm and began shooting, reported wlap.iheart.com.
Guard members ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, but the suspect fired at them. Three Guard members returned fire, and the exchange moved into a nearby alley where the suspect fired again before being shot in the abdomen. The Guardsman was shot in the leg during the incident, sources said.
After the shooting, Guard members provided first aid to the suspect with help from D.C. Fire and EMS personnel. Both the Guardsman and the suspect were taken to local hospitals for treatment. The suspect was arrested, and the Guardsman has since been released, according to a spokesperson for the D.C. Joint Task Force.
Interim Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated that police are not seeking additional suspects but are asking witnesses or those involved in the fight to come forward. The Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs Division and Criminal Investigations Division are investigating the shooting. Chief Carroll emphasized there is no further threat to the community.
