Data centre firms raise concerns about AI industry's financial health
Neocloud companies leasing computing power to AI developers face financial challenges amid industry debate.
BBC Technology reported that neocloud firms like CoreWeave and Nebius, which operate large data centres leasing computing resources to AI developers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta, have come under scrutiny regarding their financial stability.
These companies often finance their operations through long-term lease contracts with major tech customers, using the contracts and AI hardware as collateral to borrow money. This model leads to significant debt, with amounts measured in the tens of billions of pounds, according to BBC Technology.
Industry analysts have expressed concerns about the sustainability of these firms. Gartner predicts that by 2030, 80% of neocloud companies may cease independent operations, while Forrester expects some to be acquired soon due to financial difficulties.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sought to downplay these worries on CNBC, describing neocloud firms as a small and external part of the overall AI ecosystem.
The situation highlights ongoing debates in Silicon Valley about the financial health of the AI sector and the risks associated with the infrastructure supporting it.
