Federal detainees with pending cases in the Charlotte area will now be housed in the Mecklenburg County Jail in Uptown Charlotte and the newly reopened Jail North, according to WCCB Charlotte. This marks the return of federal inmates to the county after a three-year pause since 2023, when the previous agreement with the U.S. Marshals ended.

Currently, about 350 federal inmates facing criminal proceedings in the Western District of North Carolina are housed out-of-state, but approximately 60 will be relocated immediately to Jail North, WBTV reported. Additional relocations may occur as logistics allow.

Officials say housing federal detainees locally will speed up the criminal justice process by keeping inmates closer to their lawyers and trial locations. The federal government will pay a per inmate, per night fee to Mecklenburg County, which will help fund jail operations and bring federal tax dollars back to the area, according to statements from the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina and the U.S. Marshal's office.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden noted that Jail North has over 700 beds, with 651 for adults, and that this change does not affect ongoing discussions about housing juveniles in the county jail. Officials emphasized that the return of federal inmates is seen as a positive step for the community and jail programs.

The relocation of federal detainees to Mecklenburg County aims to reduce costs associated with transportation and legal proceedings, as well as to support local employment and services, according to WBTV and WCCB Charlotte reports.
