Federal officials investigate fire at Mississippi police department
A fire damaged the Senatobia Police Department amid ongoing community outrage over a recent officer-involved shooting.
Federal and local agencies are investigating a fire that occurred early Saturday morning at the Senatobia Police Department in Mississippi, ABC News reported.
Firefighters responded to smoke in the building at 4:58 a.m. and were able to quickly extinguish the fire, according to the Senatobia Fire Department. Details about the extent of the damage have not been released.
The police department has faced significant community backlash after an officer shot and killed a 1-year-old child during a shoplifting investigation in June. The child, Kohen Wiley, was in a vehicle with his mother and another woman, who denied any theft and have not been charged.
In September, the police chief was dismissed following reports of racist language in private messages, and the officer involved in the shooting resigned earlier this month. The Mississippi Attorney General's office cleared the officer of criminal wrongdoing after its investigation.
