Judge dismisses Trump’s $10 billion defamation suit against Wall Street Journal
A federal judge in Florida dismissed President Trump's revised defamation suit over a story about a birthday card linked to Jeffrey Epstein.
A federal judge in Florida has dismissed a revised $10 billion defamation lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump against The Wall Street Journal, NBC News reported.
The suit concerned a Wall Street Journal story about a birthday card Trump allegedly sent to Jeffrey Epstein more than 20 years ago. The card was part of a birthday book assembled for Epstein's 50th birthday in 2003.
U.S. District Judge Darrin Gayles found that Trump's amended complaint did not meet the legal standard to prove the newspaper published the story with actual malice, which is required in defamation cases involving public figures.
The judge noted that since this was Trump's second attempt to make such allegations and both attempts failed to plausibly allege actual malice, dismissal with prejudice was appropriate.
Trump initially sued the newspaper shortly after the story was published, which described a card featuring a hand-drawn outline of a naked woman and a note attributed to Trump.
The dismissal means that Trump cannot refile the same claims against The Wall Street Journal regarding this story.
