320,000 protest across France over living costs with some clashes in cities
Thousands marched in France for the third weekend against living costs; some clashes occurred after largely peaceful protests.
Around 320,000 people participated in protests across France on Saturday, marking the third consecutive weekend of demonstrations over living costs, according to the interior ministry, while organizers estimated nearly half a million participants, France 24 reported.
The protests were largely peaceful during the day but tensions escalated in the evening with clashes occurring in Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, and Marseille, where police used tear gas to disperse rioters, The Guardian and France 24 reported.
Authorities noted that security forces maintained control of city centers despite facing significant violence, with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warning of potential further unrest during Halloween celebrations.
The protests follow earlier riots and looting on October 17 that caused damage to shops and public buildings, prompting a strong police response this weekend to prevent similar incidents.
These demonstrations have also inspired youth-led protests across Europe, highlighting broader concerns about living costs and public services, France 24 added.
