Newsom warns federal judges about potential election interference in California
Governor Newsom alerts federal judges to possible federal warrants targeting election materials before certification.
California Governor Gavin Newsom sent letters to chief judges of the state's four federal district courts cautioning them about potential requests from the Trump administration for search warrants related to election materials, San Jose Inside reported.
Newsom expressed concern that federal agents might seek to seize ballots, election records, or certified voting technology while the election is still underway and before results are certified. He emphasized the importance of protecting California's election integrity.
The governor clarified that his letters were not connected to any current warrant applications but were a preventive measure amid increased attacks on election officials and the electoral process by the Trump administration.
Newsom's letters were sent to the chief judges of the Northern, Eastern, Central, and Southern District Courts of California. The warnings come after Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter and other federal officials have warned state and local election officials about potential legal consequences for noncompliance with federal demands.
