Former Dallas officer who fatally shot man in mistaken apartment to be released on parole
Amber Guyger, convicted in 2018 Dallas shooting, granted parole after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence.
Amber Guyger, a former Dallas police officer convicted of killing a man in his apartment in 2018, is set to be released on parole after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence, ABC11 WTVD reported.
Guyger shot Botham Jean, a 26-year-old accountant from St. Lucia, after mistakenly entering his apartment, which she thought was her own. The shooting drew national attention due to its circumstances and the broader context of police shootings involving Black men and white officers.
The Texas Board of Pardons and Parole, appointed by Governor Greg Abbott, initially denied Guyger's parole request in 2024 but later approved it despite objections from Jean's family, who strongly opposed the early release.
Guyger was arrested three days after the shooting, fired from the police force before her trial, and faced a sentence range from two years to life in prison. Prosecutors had requested a 28-year sentence.
The case included a notable moment during sentencing when Jean's brother and the presiding Black judge embraced the sobbing Guyger. At trial, Guyger stated she mistakenly believed Jean was an intruder after entering what she thought was her own apartment.
