German national held for allegedly trying to join Islamic State abroad
A 21-year-old German is in pre-trial detention for attempting to join IS and preparing violence, prosecutors say.
Germany's federal prosecutor's office reported that a 21-year-old German national has been placed in pre-trial detention for allegedly trying to join the Islamic State (IS) terror group abroad, according to German news agency dpa.
The suspect was extradited to Germany after being arrested in Pakistan in February 2025. Prosecutors say he initially traveled from Berlin to Ethiopia in January 2025 aiming to join IS in Somalia but never reached Somalia, instead going to Pakistan.
He faces charges of attempted membership in a terrorist organization abroad and preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state, the federal prosecutor's spokeswoman told dpa.
Islamic extremist attacks have occurred in Germany before, including the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack that killed 12 people. Recently, a German court sentenced two individuals for crimes related to IS, including enslavement and abuse of Yazidi girls in Iraq.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about individuals attempting to join terrorist groups abroad and the legal actions taken by German authorities to prevent such activities.
