Iowa Democrat wins state House seat despite suspending campaign for health
Eric Armstrong won a western Iowa state House race despite suspending his campaign two months prior due to health issues.
A Democrat named Eric Armstrong won a western Iowa state House district election despite suspending his campaign in September because of personal health concerns, WTOP reported. His name remained on the ballot, and he secured 55% of the vote from more than 8,000 voters in the district, according to WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando.
The district includes parts of Council Bluffs and Carter Lake and borders Omaha, Nebraska, WPLG Local 10 noted. Armstrong won by a margin of 865 votes over Republican Keith Jones, a Pottawattamie County supervisor and retired police lieutenant, WTOP reported.
Armstrong had announced on September 7 that he was stepping down from the campaign to focus on his health, thanking voters for their understanding and requesting privacy, WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando stated. Despite suspending his campaign, he expressed pride in his victory and commitment to represent the district's message at the state Capitol starting in January, WTOP reported.
This election result reflects broader Democratic gains in Iowa and nationwide during the midterms, fueled by voter dissatisfaction with high costs, government corruption, and foreign war, according to WTOP. While Republicans still control the Iowa Legislature, they face a reduced House majority and a Democratic governor after Rob Sand's gubernatorial win, WTOP noted.
The seat was previously held by Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek, who won a U.S. Senate seat Tuesday, WPLG Local 10 reported. Turek narrowly led in his home county over a Republican opponent, indicating competitive races across the state, WTOP added.
