Los Angeles County voters will participate in the Nov. 3 general election to select winners in 32 legislative races, comprising eight state Senate and 24 Assembly districts, according to the Whittier Daily News and San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

Several state Senate districts are affected by term limits, including the 24th and 34th districts where outgoing Sens. Ben Allen and Tom Umberg are stepping down. Additionally, Sen. María Elena Durazo of the 26th District did not seek reelection, having won a seat on the L.A. County Board of Supervisors in June.

In the Assembly races, five districts have no incumbent candidates due to term limits affecting Assemblymembers Tom Lackey, Jacqui Irwin, Mike Gipson, Al Muratsuchi, and Sharon Quirk-Silva. Meanwhile, two incumbents, Mark Gonzalez and Tina McKinnor, are running unopposed in the 54th and 61st districts, respectively, both Democrats.

Some candidates secured more than 50% of the vote in the June primary, but state legislative races advance the top two vote-getters regardless of party affiliation to the general election. Notable contests include Sen. Caroline Menjivar, a Democrat seeking a second term in the 20th District, against Republican Tony Rodriguez.

The 20th Senate District covers parts of the northern and eastern San Fernando Valley, including Burbank and Canoga Park. In the eastern San Gabriel Valley, Sen. Susan Rubio is running for a third term against Republican Mike Netter in a district that also covers parts of San Bernardino County.

One of the most expensive legislative races involves West Hollywood Councilmember John Erickson and media consultant Brian Goldsmith vying to succeed term-limited Sen. Ben Allen in the 24th District.

Voters in Los Angeles County will have a significant role in shaping state legislative representation this election cycle.
