First lady Melania Trump announced she brokered a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, according to ABC News and CBS News.

The ceasefire is set to begin on October 29 and aims to allow humanitarian aid to enter the city and to prepare a civilian evacuation through a safe passageway, the first lady's office said.

Oleshky is described as a front-line war city with a population primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, food, clean water, and medicine. The city has limited electricity and is surrounded by mined roads amid ongoing military attacks.

Melania Trump reportedly worked directly with both Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the ceasefire's terms and acted as an exclusive intermediary to align the parties on objectives, timing, and procedures.

Non-military civilian leaders from both countries will visit residents to assess their needs, and coordinated support will be provided for those wishing to evacuate, with some expected to go to Russia and others to Ukraine.

The first lady's office also secured an American media organization to document the efforts of both Russian and Ukrainian teams in Oleshky.

President Donald Trump commented that the ceasefire and his wife's involvement in peace efforts is "not the worst idea" and noted that both sides are cooperating with her.
