multistorey building collapses in nairobi, several feared trapped
A building under construction collapsed in Nairobi's Eastleigh area, with rescue efforts ongoing amid fears of trapped people.
A multistorey building under construction collapsed on a busy commercial street in Nairobi's Eastleigh neighborhood, according to Al Jazeera and DW English. The collapse occurred around 1pm local time on Friday, leaving a large pile of concrete rubble.
The building had more than 10 floors under construction, with the basement and ground floor occupied by shops including an electronics store, a butchery, and a grocery, Al Jazeera reported. Approximately 11 people inside these shops have not yet been accounted for.
Kenya's Interior Minister stated that 67 workers were at the site during the collapse; one was injured while the rest escaped unharmed. Rescue teams from the national government, county government, and the Red Cross have made contact with some survivors trapped inside the rubble.
Rescue efforts have been complicated by the slow arrival of heavy equipment, with rescuers using poles and excavators to clear debris. Police fired tear gas to disperse looters targeting nearby shops, as reported by DW English and Al Jazeera.
Authorities have warned of a potential second collapse due to the building leaning on its neighbor. The developers and officials are being called to provide answers about why people were inside a building still under construction, according to Al Jazeera.
