Homeland Security secretary visits Lumberton to support GOP ahead of midterms
Markwayne Mullin joined GOP leaders in Lumberton amid strong Democratic early voting in North Carolina.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin visited Lumberton on Friday to support Republican efforts ahead of the midterm elections, WRAL reported. He appeared alongside Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley and U.S. Rep. David Rouzer, whose district includes parts of Robeson County.
The visit comes as early voting in North Carolina shows strong turnout, with about 1.3 million ballots cast as of Thursday. Democrats have accounted for approximately 42% of early votes, while unaffiliated voters make up about 34%, according to WRAL.
Polls indicate that Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley is trailing Democratic candidate Roy Cooper. This, combined with the early voting data, suggests challenges for Republicans in the state.
Mullin's visit follows recent appearances in North Carolina by former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, signaling a concerted GOP effort to energize voters in key areas ahead of Election Day.
