Woman killed by multiple vehicles on I-40 near RDU in Durham
A woman died early Friday after being struck by several vehicles on I-40 near RDU, causing lane closures and traffic delays.
Durham police reported that a woman was struck and killed by multiple unknown vehicles on Interstate 40 East near Raleigh-Durham International Airport early Friday morning. The incident occurred near Davis Drive around 1:30 a.m.
Following the crash, eastbound lanes of I-40 were closed for about a mile between Exit 280 at Davis Drive and Exit 281 at South Miami Boulevard. The closure caused severe traffic delays extending onto Interstate 885 as well.
By 8 a.m., one lane of I-40 eastbound had reopened, allowing traffic to flow again, and all lanes were fully reopened by 8:30 a.m. Police maintained a presence at the scene during the investigation, restricting access to the area.
Traffic backups during the closure resembled typical rush hour congestion, with miles of delays reported. Aerial footage captured extensive traffic jams during the morning hours as authorities worked to clear the scene and reopen the highway.
