Nikita Kucherov became the Tampa Bay Lightning's career points leader during a game against Utah, reaching 1,138 points and surpassing Steven Stamkos' previous franchise record of 1,137 points, WUSF reported.
Kucherov's milestone came when he assisted on a power play goal by Brayden Point, marking his 10th assist of the season and 1,138th career point in his 890th game. The Lightning players celebrated on the ice following the achievement.
Coach Jon Cooper praised Kucherov as possibly the smartest player he has coached, highlighting his advanced understanding of the game and skillful puck handling. Cooper shared an anecdote showing Kucherov's ability to analyze plays deeply.
Kucherov, 33, began his NHL career in 2013 and quickly made an impact by scoring on his first shot. He has since developed into a key player known for his puck distribution and ability to control the pace of the game, according to Avalanche coach Jared Bednar.
Last season, Kucherov had an MVP-winning performance with 44 goals and 86 assists. Colorado defenseman Josh Manson noted Kucherov's calmness with the puck and his skill in finding scoring opportunities, making him a challenging opponent.
