No. 1 Georgia loses 27-24 to Auburn on last-second field goal
Georgia's top-ranked football team falls to Auburn after a walk-off 34-yard field goal at Sanford Stadium.
Georgia's football team, ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25, suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling 27-24 to unranked Auburn at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Auburn's Alex McPherson kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired to secure the win, with the Tigers celebrating on the field, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown led the ground attack with 115 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, also throwing a touchdown pass.
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton led a fourth-quarter touchdown drive to tie the game but later lost a crucial fumble with 58 seconds left while driving in Auburn territory, as detailed by FOX 5 Atlanta. Auburn safety Sylvester Smith-Reed recovered the fumble, setting up the game-winning kick.
The Bulldogs also faced setbacks with two interceptions thrown by Stockton and a roughing-the-passer penalty on Georgia's Gabe Harris Jr., which helped Auburn get into field goal range, according to FOX 5 Atlanta and the Associated Press.
This loss ended Georgia's nine-game winning streak over Auburn and their 53-game winning streak against unranked teams, according to pressdemocrat.com. Georgia will now enter a bye week before hosting Florida at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on October 31, FOX 5 Atlanta noted.
