The death of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby has led to a comprehensive reform of the Northern Territory's child protection department, according to reports by southernhighlandnews.com.au and others.

The girl's body was found five days after her alleged abduction from Alice Springs' Old Timers camp in April, an event that sparked national outrage and vigils across Australia.

An independent review, initiated by the NT government and conducted by former NSW police commissioner Karen Webb and public servant Greg Shanahan, found extensive failings in the child protection department, including repeated failures to adequately assess safety threats to Kumanjayi and her family.

The NT government has accepted all 45 recommendations from the review to implement considerable structural reforms in the child protection system, as stated by NT Children and Families Minister Robyn Cahill.

The minister described the mistakes as "unforgivable" and highlighted a disconnect between legislative requirements and their application. She has directed an audit of safety frameworks and assessments of all individuals involved in care to improve child protection.

An Indigenous children's advocacy group emphasized that addressing broader issues such as poverty, inadequate housing, and healthcare in remote communities is necessary to effectively protect vulnerable children.
