official arrested in alleged cover-up of mayor's cartel-linked killing in mexico
Mexican authorities arrested Uruapan's welfare secretary for concealing involvement in the killing of a mayor targeted by a cartel.
Mexican prosecutors announced the arrest of Rosa Alejandra Vargas, the welfare secretary of Uruapan, for her probable role in concealing details related to the killing of Mayor Carlos Manzo, CBS News reported.
Manzo was assassinated last November during Day of the Dead celebrations in Uruapan, a city in Michoacan state, in an attack reportedly ordered by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). His death sparked widespread outrage across Mexico.
Authorities noted that Vargas is connected to several individuals already detained in the case and had previously failed to appear before investigators, according to statements by Michoacan state prosecutors.
Carlos Manzo was known for his outspoken stance against organized crime in Michoacan, a region troubled by cartel violence. His killing is part of a broader pattern where at least 13 mayors have been killed in Mexico over the past two years, presenting a significant challenge for the current government.
Political violence linked to cartels often targets local officials who resist corruption or cartel influence, aiming to silence opposition and protect illicit profits, experts say. Manzo's assassination has contributed to an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in Uruapan.
