The MV Odyssey, a luxury cruise ship launched in October 2024 and marketed as a continuous around-the-world voyage, ended its journey abruptly in Cambodia this week, CBS News reported.

The cruise, operated by Florida-based Villa Vie Residences, allowed passengers to purchase cabins and become ship residents. However, over 200 passengers and dozens of crew members were stranded when operations were suddenly suspended due to major financial problems.

According to multiple sources familiar with the final weeks on board, the ship faced several challenges over about three months, including a scramble to secure fuel while docked in Singapore, a rush to obtain food provisions after shipments stopped, and temporary detainment in Hong Kong.

In early August, Villa Vie warned that the ship was at risk of detainment in Singapore and urgently needed funds. Passengers raised money to pay a fuel supplier $400,000 directly from a resident's personal account to keep the ship moving, but the company ultimately ran out of money.

Residents expressed concern about Villa Vie's financial management, noting the company was behind on payments for crew, provisions, and fuel. A source indicated that a spike in fuel prices after a U.S. attack on Iran severely impacted the business model.

The sudden end of the MV Odyssey's voyage left many passengers facing significant financial losses and uncertainty about the future of the ship and its operations.
