San Jose police are investigating the city's 22nd homicide of 2026 after a man died on October 11 from injuries he suffered in a shooting days earlier, according to the Mercury News and East Bay Times.

The shooting occurred at 5:25 p.m. on October 7 in the 1700 block of McLaughlin Avenue near Phelan Avenue. Officers did not find a suspect or victim at the scene, San Jose police Sgt. Tony Diep said in a news release.

Investigators determined that the suspect opened fire on a car, injuring the man who then sought treatment at a local hospital for a life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim later died from his injuries.

The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner will release the victim's identity after confirmation and notification of next of kin. At this point last year, San Jose police had investigated 23 homicides.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Sgt. Julien Taylor or Detective Catherine Van Brande at the provided email addresses or by phone.
