Several institutions across the United States have issued notices of intended repatriation of Native American cultural items in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). These notices were published in the Federal Register on October 22, 2026.

California State University, Fullerton, plans to repatriate cultural items identified as unassociated funerary objects or objects of cultural patrimony that have a cultural affiliation with Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations, according to the Federal Register.

Similarly, the Yale Peabody Museum announced its intention to return unassociated funerary objects culturally affiliated with Indian Tribes. The Detroit Institute of Arts also intends to repatriate objects of cultural patrimony linked to Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations.

Other institutions involved include the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Sonoma State University, and the Field Museum in Chicago. Each plans to repatriate cultural items such as unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, or objects of cultural patrimony with established cultural affiliations.

These actions reflect ongoing compliance with NAGPRA, which mandates the return of certain cultural items to affiliated tribes or organizations. The Federal Register notes that these notices are part of a prototype Web 2.0 version and advises verification against official editions for legal research purposes.
