Six Flags Over Georgia to add seat belts on Goliath coaster after fatal fall
Six Flags announces safety upgrades including seat belts on Goliath coaster following a deadly accident at its Georgia park.
Six Flags Over Georgia plans to reopen its Goliath roller coaster with new seat belts installed, according to reports from ABC7 News and news8000.com. This decision follows the death of a 42-year-old Atlanta resident who fell from the ride earlier this month. The fatal incident occurred on October 12, and the park has kept the ride closed pending safety reviews.
The Goliath coaster, known for its 3.5-minute ride time, speeds up to 70 mph and reaches heights of 200 feet. Previously, it featured a waist restraint but lacked an over-the-shoulder harness. Six Flags' CEO stated that adding seat belts represents a significant change to the ride's restraint system as investigations continue.
In addition to installing seat belts on Goliath, Six Flags is reinforcing safety measures across its parks. The company has engaged independent engineers and ride inspection specialists to review safety procedures on its attractions, according to ABC7 News. The CEO emphasized the importance of safety and the comprehensive training provided to ride operators.
Several other park visitors were injured during the incident, including four minors, according to police reports cited by ABC7 News. Six Flags has committed to evaluating the findings from ongoing investigations and taking appropriate actions to ensure guest safety before reopening the ride.
