UK police re-arrest two men over suspected Iran-linked plot at US air base
Two men were re-arrested in the UK on suspicion of aiding Iran's intelligence in a plot at a US-run air base used against Iran.
British police have re-arrested two men on suspicion of assisting Iran's intelligence service in connection with a suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford, a US-run air base in western England, according to PBS NewsHour World and Al Jazeera English.
The two men, a 24-year-old British national and a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national, were initially arrested in late September and early October but had been released on bail pending further investigation, Counter Terrorism Policing in the UK said.
The incident involved reports of three suspicious vans near the base, leading to a major police operation with armed officers and bomb-disposal experts. Police found gasoline in the vans but no explosives, and residents near the base were evacuated as a precaution.
British authorities have linked the suspected plot to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stating the plot was "almost certainly" directed by Iran. Iran has denied involvement but has previously stated bases used to attack its territory are legitimate targets.
Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, described the investigation as "hugely complex" and ongoing, with police examining the extent and ambition of Iranian involvement.
The incident caused the US to withdraw its bombers from RAF Fairford, which has been used to launch strikes on Iran during the current conflict.
Police continue to investigate multiple lines of inquiry as no charges have yet been filed.
