Ukrainian officials announced that Starlink and Starshield satellite internet speeds have returned to normal after more than a week of disruptions, according to ABC News. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry confirmed that monitoring systems recorded the restoration of the satellite services, which remain stable at speeds above 400 km/h, as reported by ABC News.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that normal operating speeds were restored, improving front-line logistics and defense capabilities, according to NPR News and CBS News. The disruptions had hampered military operations and drone flights used in Ukraine's defense against Russia.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk acknowledged on social media that his company had throttled the Starlink service in Ukraine due to violations of the terms of service, specifically the use of the system for offensive drone strikes, CBS News reported. Musk said the throttling was intended to close this loophole while maintaining that the U.S. government controlled changes to Starshield, SpaceX's military-grade satellite service.

The Ukrainian Defense Minister highlighted that direct dialogue at the highest levels helped achieve the restoration, emphasizing the importance of the satellite systems for troops, drone operations, logistics, and communications, ABC News noted. The disruptions raised concerns among Ukrainian military officials about the impact on their defense capabilities.

The restoration of Starlink and Starshield services is seen as critical for Ukraine's ongoing military efforts amid recent Russian attacks, including a deadly strike, according to ABC News and NPR News. Ukrainian officials had called on U.S. leaders to assist in resolving the issue, which was addressed through talks involving President Zelenskyy and U.S. officials.

The situation underscores the reliance of Ukraine's military on commercial and military satellite internet services for communication and defense, as well as the complexities involved in managing these technologies during conflict, CBS News reported.
